St. John's Wort
Latin name: Hypericum perforatum
Herb action: Astringent, nervine tonic, vulnerary
Parts used: Flowering tops
Traditional benefits: Mood support, PMS, menopause, seasonal affective disorder
St. John’s Wort has been used in herbalism since antiquity. The Greeks and the Romans used it in the treatment of nerve-related disorders. Currently in Germany, St. John’s wort is the most commonly prescribed anti-depressant. The German Commission E designated St. John’s wort as an approved herb in 1984.
Mood support
St. John’s Wort is one of the most studied medicinal herbs out there. Randomized, controlled studies show a positive effect on mood. The flavonoids hypericin and hyperforin are thought to be responsible for much of its pharmacological properties. However, the whole plant seems to have the most positive effect on mood likely due to the full spectrum of phytochemicals,
Studies show that St. John’s Wort acts via inhibition of the reuptake of serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline, along with activation of gamma-amino-butyrate and glutamate receptors. Many studies show that St. John’s Wort is effective in the treatment of mild to moderate depression. The herb may also support stress reduction and anxiety.
Menopause and perimenopause benefits
Some women have found St John's Wort can reduce their hot flushes and night sweats during menopause. A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study titled “Effects of St John's Wort on severity, frequency, and duration of hot flashes in premenopausal, perimenopausal and post-menopausal women" found a significant improvement around the 4-8 week mark of treatment.
