Skullcap

Latin name: Scutellaria lateriflora

Herb action: Nervine, nervous system relaxant and tonic

Parts used: Aerial parts

Traditional uses: Mental and physical exhaustion, sleep, anxiety, muscle tension

Skullcap has a long history of use in Western Herbalism. It’s a gentle, nourishing, and restorative herb to a frazzled nervous system. Traditionally, its been used for its calming properties, to support exhausted nerves resulting from mental and physical exhaustion, to ease muscle tension, and to support normal sleep patterns.

Skullcap is truly a herb for our modern and hectic times and may be used to restore balance to overworked and overscheduled individuals. It helps to relieve occasional tension and stress, circular thoughts, and nervousness. It can be used throughout the day during occasional stressful situations or at night before bed to calm worried thoughts and promote normal, healthy sleep.

The traditional uses of Skullcap have spurred scientific interest in its potential health benefits. Studies suggest Skullcap may have anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects through its influence on the activity of certain neurotransmitters, such as GABA, which plays a role in relaxation. Skullcap may also offer some relief from tension headaches, although the mechanisms of action are not fully understood.

This is an incredible plant that helps the body soften, release, and let go of the day’s tension.
