Holy Basil

Common names: Holy basil, Tulsi

Latin name: Ocimum sanctum

Herb action: Adaptogen, nervine, nootropic

Parts used: Leaves

Traditional uses: Adrenal support, immunity, stress and overexertion, mood and cognition

Holy Basil is a rasayana and considered sacred in Ayurveda. The traditional Indian medicine system recognizes three gunas which are attributes and qualities:

  • sattva: balance. lightness, and clarity
  • rajas: action, passion, desire, effort
  • tamas: inertia and sluggishness.

Holy Basil is considered sattvic, which means it promotes a sense of lightness, clarity, and well-being; and is considered an aid in attaining spiritual enlightenment. Daily consumption is said to prevent disease, promote general health, wellbeing and longevity and assist in dealing with the stresses of daily life.

In Western Herbalism, Holy Basil is classified as an adaptogen meaning it helps bring the body back to balance in the face of physical and mental stress. In addition to supporting a healthy stress response, the herb may also help maintain blood sugar levels within a normal range, decrease inflammation, and promote longevity. Holy Basil counters metabolic stress through normalization of blood glucose and lipid levels.

As a nootropic, Holy Basil is used to support mood, promote relaxation, and reduce stress. Nootropics are herbs that are used to support cognitive function and executive functions like focus, memory, creativity, or motivation in healthy individuals.
