Dandelion

Latin name: Taraxacum officinale

Herb action:  Alterative, cholagogue, bitter, diuretic

Parts used: Root, leaves, flower

Traditional Uses: promotes healthy digestion, liver support, gut microbiome, hormone balance (PMS and menopause support), skin support, and urinary tract support

Dandelion root is one of the most common weeds on earth and an herbalist’s favorite. Both the leaves and roots are a nutrient-rich source of vitamins A, B complex, and C, as well as minerals such as iron, potassium, and zinc. Both have been consumed as food across many different cultures.

Promotes a healthy gut microbiome

In Western Herbalism and Traditional Chinese Medicine, Dandelion Root is used to support the liver and gall bladder, to promote digestion and to support the detoxification process. The root is rich in inulin and other prebiotic starches that feed healthy gut bacteria and may help strengthen the gut microbiome. A healthy microbiome can reduce inflammation and support a healthy immune system.

The leaves are a source of potassium, which may also contribute to the plant’s ability to encourage healthy fluid elimination. The bitter flavor of dandelion comes from sesquiterpene lactones and tasting the bitter flavor helps promote digestion and encourages the elimination of bile from the gallbladder. Dandelion may help improve liver function and support the liver’s detoxification pathways.
