Cordyceps

Latin name: Cordyceps sinensis

Herb action: General and adrenal tonic, immune modulator, energy support, antioxidant

Parts Used: Fruiting body, mycelium

Traditional benefits: Adrenal support, adaptogen, immune modulator, stress, fatigue, overexertion

Cordyceps is a powerful adaptogen that supports overall endocrine health. It's considered an immunomodulator that supports the immune system and is used to support the liver and kidneys.

For centuries, Cordyceps has been a revered remedy in various Eastern medical traditions and is believed to promote longevity and vitality. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it's considered a 'Qi tonic' and is believed to strengthen the body's vital energy flow. It's used to address a wide range of conditions associated with Qi deficiency, including fatigue, weakness, respiratory problems, and low libido. In Korean traditional medicine, Cordyceps is used to support kidney health and respiratory function.

The mushroom is favoured by athletes who use it to enhance physical performance and reduce fatigue. Studies suggest that Cordyceps may enhance exercise performance and reduce fatigue by increasing oxygen uptake and ATP production in muscle cells.

Cordyceps for immunity

Like other immune-supporting mushrooms, the fruiting bodies of Cordyceps contain polysaccharides, specifically a type called beta-glucans. Many studies show that beta-glucans support immune health and healthy cell growth and turnover.

Early research indicates Cordyceps might modulate the immune system by influencing the activity of immune cells. A phytochemical called cordycepin may be involved in various cellular processes including anti-viral and antioxidant activities.
