Black Cohosh
Common names: Black Cohosh
Latin name: Actaea racemosa or Cimicifuga racemosa
Herb action: Female reproductive health tonic, muscle relaxant
Parts used: Root
Traditional benefits: Musculoskeletal pain, fever, cough, sluggish labor, menstrual irregularities, tonic to support women’s reproductive health
Black Cohosh is most commonly used for menopausal symptoms, including vasomotor symptoms like hot flashes and night sweats, vaginal dryness, heart palpitations, tinnitus, vertigo, sleep disturbances, nervousness, and irritability.
Studies suggest that Black Cohosh may reduce the frequency and intensity of hot flashes and night sweats. Hot flashes can disrupt sleep and by potentially reducing their occurrence, the herb may improve sleep quality in menopausal women. Some studies suggest Black Cohosh might offer benefits for mood swings, irritability, and anxiety that can accompany perimenopause and menopause.
Experts believe that Black Cohosh raises the body’s levels of estrogen, that it impacts levels of luteinizing hormone (LH), or follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Some researchers believe that Black Cohosh might exert its effects through a brain-related action, such as modulation of serotonergic pathways, or through its potential ability to act as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, or selective estrogen receptor modulator.
