For over 2,000 years, Astragalus root has been a cornerstone of Traditional Chinese Medicine and is one of the 50 fundamental herbs described in TCM. It’s considered a 'Qi tonic,' and is believed to strengthen the body's vital energy and to promote longevity. The root is a powerful adaptogen, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.
Astragalus is also called Huang Qi which means 'yellow life energy.' This refers to the herb’s connection to the Earth Element, which rules the Spleen and Stomach and is associated with supporting muscle strength, immunity, digestion, and blood.
Astragalus and immunity
One area of research interest is Astragalus' impact on the immune system. The herb is an adaptogen, so it helps the body adapt to physical, mental, or emotional stress. Studies suggest it may enhance the activity of certain immune cells and increase antibody production, which could be beneficial in fighting off colds and flu. The herb also shows promising antiviral properties.
Astragalus has traditionally been used to alleviate respiratory problems such as coughs, colds, and allergies. It also helps to improve energy levels and combat tiredness.
Longevity benefits of Astragalus
This antioxidant-rich herb may help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. This benefit could contribute to overall health and well-being. One constituent called Astragaloside IV is known to stimulate telomerase activity and therefore mitigates telomere shortening which results from oxidative stress and and drives accelerated cellular aging. Telomerase enzymes renew telomeres, but their production is greatly reduced as the body ages. Telomeres are the protective ends of chromosomes that slowly shorten and wear out each time cell division occurs in the body - a process central to human aging.
Early research suggests Astragalus might offer some protection against heart disease by improving blood flow and reducing inflammation, but more studies in this area are needed.
