Nettle leaf (Urtica dioica) is a deeply nutritive and mineral-rich herb that has been used for the skin since ancient times. Its Latin name Urtica means “to burn,” which refers to its stinging hairs that deliver histamine into the skin that create the well-known stinging sensation.
Nettle leaves are high in minerals like iron, calcium, potassium, magnesium, silica, zinc, and others. Due to its rich mineral content, it’s used to support healthy skin, hair, and nails. The plant is often recommended for anemia and itchy, inflammatory skin conditions. The tea also improves the symptoms of seasonal allergies. In skincare, nettle is used for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis) berry is an adaptogen used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. In TCM, Schisandra contains all five ‘flavours’ —salty, sweet, sour, spicy and bitter and is considered to benefit all the major yin organs, including the liver, lungs, heart, kidneys and spleen.
Schisandra helps to strengthen the body’s resilience to stress and enhances both physical and mental energy. The berry is rich in lignans which are anti-inflammatory and help smooth and even out skin tone. It is a potent antioxidant helping to protect the skin and body from environmental stress.
Calendula (Calendula officinalis) is an important plant for many skin issues. It’s recognized by both the World Health Organization and the European Medicines Agency as a plant for wound healing, skin damage, and inflammatory skin conditions.
Calendula can be used by all skin types and it’s particularly helpful for those with red, irritable, sensitive, and acne-prone skin. Due to its high antioxidant content, it helps to project the skin from free radical damage and can help decrease fine lines and dull-looking skin. Calendula is high in natural fatty acids and is an excellent plant for moisturizing the skin.
